Kindergarten-Grade 3 — From the time Jack is a young boy, he dreams of being a pilot, but is never able to save enough money to afford flying lessons. He grows up, marries, and eventually plays flying games with his seven children, all of whom have been named for famous aviators. Even when he builds a homemade airplane, it crashes before becoming airborne. Finally, on his 60th birthday, his youngest daughter, who has become a pilot and flight instructor, lands a helicopter in his yard and offers him his first chance to fly. This is a warm story of how one man's dream is finally realized despite the many obstacles he faces throughout his life. Lively watercolor illustrations full of homey details complement this spirited story of sacrifice and ultimate achievement. An additional purchase, pleasant enough for family sharing. Sally R. "Flying Jack's story has in it all the romance and adventure of the early flying days. It shows, too, how much you can accomplish with the help of the people who love you, and how important it is, all your life, to hold on to your dreams." - -- Reeve Lindbergh
